For the last time this season, Stefanie Renee"s much-heralded monthly poetry platform, Linguistics, takes center stage with their first annual spoken-word jamboree, Po-Fest. The lineup goes a little something like this -- drum roll, please: First up, it"s the Cultural Nationalist Brotherhood (CNB), a collective of socio-political writers dedicated to raising consciousness in the black community and bridging the gap between the incarcerated and the free. They"re celebrating their latest work, Time Is of the Essence, an anthology of poetry and prose written by incarcerated black men.
Aside from the CNB, the verse of Ray X, Reuben Jones, K-Roc and Lil Bert will hold court. Ushering in sound and song are Abayomi Awadesu, Aaron Gamble, Devon King, Malik Murray, The Truth, Melissa Palmer, Tyrone Jones, Lacy Harmon, Talia Sykes, Khalif Ennis, Meeka Balseiro and Cassendre Xavier. Part 2 of the show hosts more spoken word from L.I.F.E., Walidah Imarisha, Misty Sol, Tyrene Wright, Ed Coleman, Adeena Howard and Rasheed Bey. And staying true to Linguistics tradition, yes, there is an open mic.
First Annual Po-Fest, Sat., April 19, 8 p.m., free, The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St., 215-573-3234.
