Sick and tired of the same old family functions? Add a little piquancy to the monotony of this year’s Easter holiday by participating in the Easter Promenade on April 20. This four-hour extravaganza begins with a parade led by Mayor Street and the Easter Bunny down South Street where a congenial community of clowns, mimes, magicians, Mummers and even a petting zoo will compete for your attention. Best of all, this event gives people an opportunity to express their Easter creativity via a Best Dressed contest for families, children and pets. For the unconventional individual looking to go beyond the traditional bows and bonnets, there is even a Best South Street Expression category to promote flair. These contests will be judged by Philadelphia style icon and MC Henri David, along with local figures such as Councilman Frank DiCicco, City Commerce Director James Cuorato, Karen Jordan of Channel 17 and Tiffany McElroy of Channel 10. Everyone is encouraged to catwalk behind the procession in their most artistic ensemble, which could win participants gift certificates to local stores. So this Easter, rather than just indulging in Cadbury Eggs and rich chocolate bunnies, why not dress like one and gain some community pride along with the requisite few pounds.
Easter Promenade, Sun., April 20, 12-4 p.m., free, South Street, promenade, 12:30 p.m., Passyunk Ave. east of Fifth and South sts., fashion contest, 1-3 p.m. (contestants should register at the stage by 1 p.m.), 215-732-7711.
