In the spirit of blowing one’s own horn...

In the spirit of blowing one’s own horn, City Paper’s staff and freelancers have been the proud recipients of a slew of journalism awards in the past few weeks.

On April 11, the Society of Professional Journalists announced the winners of the 2003 Pennsylvania state awards. City Paper picked up eight:

€ First Place, spot news, non-daily: staff (Howard Altman, Deborah Bolling, Daniel Brook, Daryl Gale) for "Rendell for President?"

€ First Place, feature, non-daily: Howard Altman for "Ghost Towns"

€ First Place, enterprise reporting, non-daily: Howard Altman for "Chasing Shadows"

€ First Place, commentary, non-daily: Howard Altman for "Pretzel Logic"

€ First Place, health and medical, non-daily: Juliet Fletcher for "Biting Back"

€ Second Place, tabloid page design: Brian Hogan

€ Second Place, photo story, non-daily: Michael T. Regan for "The Vet"

And last, but not least:

Philadelphia City Paper named Best Overall Weekly

On April 3, the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA) announced the winners of the 2003 Keystone Awards. City Paper walked away with six:

€ First Place, distinguished writing award/weeklies: Howard Altman

€ First Place, investigative reporting: Daniel Brook for "Fear Factor/Maier Options"

€ Second Place, general news: Deborah Bolling for "Fugitive Fumble"

€ Second Place, front page design: Brian Hogan

€ Honorable Mention, investigative reporting: Howard Altman for "Chasing Shadows"

€ Honorable Mention, photo story: Michael T. Regan for "The Vet"

Also in April, City Paper syndicated cartoonist Dan Perkins (a.k.a. "Tom Tomorrow") received the 35th Annual Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for outstanding reporting of problems of the disadvantaged through his weekly strip.

And on March 21, City Paper founder and editor emeritus, Bruce Schimmel, now a reporter/producer with WSCL-FM 89.5 in Delaware and Maryland, received one of the highest honors in public broadcasting: a Golden Reel Award from the National Federation of Community Broadcasters for his radio series, "Life on Delmarva."

Nice going, eh?
