Margaret Cho

Chickenshit, hypocritical bureaucracies of all manifestations: Consider yourselves forewarned. Margaret Cho's coup d'etat over conformist mindfucking has begun! The revolution will not be televised, but rather brazenly proclaimed onstage at The Academy of Music, where Cho will present her manifesto that every person is a political V.I.P., and declare an overthrow of tainted societal platitudes. Raw and uncompromising, the graphic honesty of Cho's monologues has earned her an enormously diverse following, solidified by the success of her past two national tours, I'm the One That I Want (1999) and The Notorious C.H.O. (2001), both of which were documented in concert films. On the phone from L.A., Cho exudes an effervescence and warmth. "We're all warriors," she says in regard to the fight to preserve the essence of identity in the face of society's myopic ideals. "The way we live, everything is politicized, and it's like an enduring class struggle." A San Francisco native, Cho started her stand-up career at age 16, and while she cites Richard Pryor as an influence, her comedic muse is often found through the artistic splendor of certain musical performers. "Björk and Ani DiFranco continue to boost my creativity," she says. "I've even written Ani love letters, praising her for being such an inspiration." Truly jazzed about coming to Philly -- "The Mütter Museum is my absolute favorite place in town," she says -- Cho will deliver an explicit uprising of acutely targeted venom and uniquely piquant observations from one of the most dynamic voices in contemporary humor.

Margaret Cho: The Revolution Tour, Thu., April 24, 8 p.m., $29.50-$45, The Academy of Music, Broad and Locust sts., 215-893-1999.
