Rennie Harris Puremovement at Salute to Youth

Rennie Harris, Philadelphia's hip-hop dance prophet, is always eager to spread his message to young and old alike. An upcoming show by Harris' company, Puremovement, is geared to the former, and while kids may not be dance aficionados, PMers can expect a rousing reception -- after all, youngsters are the prime consumers of hip-hop culture. The gig, part of the South Jersey Performing Arts Center's "Salute to Youth," is a follow-up to the residency Harris leads at the Creative Arts High School in Camden, N.J., where he schools the students in poppin', lockin' and boogaloo.

On Friday, participants of the residency get to strut their stuff at a performance that also features Puremovement. The troupe's five selections read like a greatest-hits list and run the gamut with works ranging from "Students of the Asphalt Jungle," a group piece where performers get down with backflips and headspins to "Endangered Species," Harris' riveting solo. This is sure to be a jammin' event, but if you or your kids want to see it, it will require playing hooky from work and school, because showtime is 11 a.m. Hmmm, sounds like a great excuse for a three-day weekend.

Rennie Harris Puremovement at Salute to Youth, Fri., May 9, 11 a.m., $5, South Jersey Performing Arts Center at the Tweeter Center, One Harbour Blvd., Camden, N.J., 856-342-6633.
