Royal Prerogative

Yes, Bernie, Steve, DL and Cedric are all nice with the laughter. But wait, that sweet-smellin' whirlwind whipping through your nostrils right now is just as rough, rowdy and simply uproarious as those dudes. Uh-huh, they're three funny women proving no one can do it better. Adele Givens, Sommore and Mo'Nique are the Queens of Comedy, and this week they'll host the Kings and Queens of Comedy Search. It's a new breed of reality TV, one that's actually funny, entertaining and a bit more meaningful than the idiotic The Bachelor and the myriad of other pathetic new shows floundering in its wake. Delving into just what it takes to make it as a comedian, the search for 12 contestants to star in the show is on! Five amateur comedians will take the stage, with one being eliminated at the end of each televised show in six cities nationwide, including Philly. The surviving four will go on to the next city, striving to become the last man/woman standing and be crowned the next Queen or King of Comedy. The final face-off takes place at Madison Square Garden for $25,000 cold cash. Mo'Nique has breathed new life into Showtime at the Apollo as the loud, colorful host. Donning the brightest of bright, decked out in skintight leather and royal blue fitted suits, she bulges with pride, authority and confidence. With these women at the helm and five fresh-faced amateurs ready to roll, you can bet your seat, this ain't your grandmother's star search.

Kings and Queens of Comedy Star Search, Sat., May 31, 8 p.m., $40-$52, Tower Theater, 69th and Ludlow sts., Upper Darby, 215-336-2000.
