Summer in the City Gala

With weather finally (please) heating up above subfreezingly damp, one of the first celebrations of hot, hot heat and such comes from the strangest locale. Not the faux beachfront properties of Del-Ave, but rather the brick-steel-glass mammoth of the Kimmel Center. Most think of the Kimmel as eternally autumnal and coolly reserved (Won't Christoph Eschenbach's bald head burn in the sun?). But the Perelman, Verizon and Kimmel plaza are out to show their spaces can be sunshiny and bouncy with a series of summer concerts, running from June to August, where seats move out and dancing ensues. While the famed Indio-Latin-Brazilian likes of La India, Orchestra Baobab, Yerba Buena and Mariza make their way here on various dates throughout the summer, Kimmel kicks it off cocktail-gala style with "Summer in the City," a fundraiser for their educational programs, this Friday. Along with sipping and supping in Commonwealth Plaza, levels of different parties will occur from the K2 lounge to the lobby: Chicago's blaring Mighty Blue Kings will bring jazzy sounds to the plaza's dancing crowd, while Philly's lord of the ring-a-ding, Jerry Blavat, spins and chats the oldies in the Perelman. But the big open-toed shoe is having k.d. lang -- currently touring with local orchestras doing her Tony Bennett-duo thing alone -- make like a songbird in Verizon Hall. And you get tan lines.

Summer in the City Gala, Fri., June 6, 5:30 p.m.-midnight, $150-$250 for 9 p.m. k.d. lang concert and post-concert party and buffet, Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999. Call 215-790-5838 for information about 7 p.m. dinner.
