Anyone expecting a rehash of U2's most famous stadium tour will be greatly amazed by having to wear dressy clothes while interacting with genuine orangutans and giraffes at the annual splashy soiree for America's first zoo. Encompassing 42-acres of Victorian gardens, steel cages and the monkey house (okay, the PECO Primate Reserve), the yearly Zoobilee has become de rigueur where out-of-doors tony affairs are concerned. This year's focus -- Jambo Africa -- concentrates on one of the Philly Zoo's largest attractions, Boscov's Safari Quest with its Soaring Safari free-flight bird show where you, the guy with the tie, can hang with a pink flamingo without necessarily being smashed drunk. If you get boozy, take a break from the live crocodiles and snakes and nosh on fine foods from Philly's most opulent restaurants. If not, enjoy yourself amidst the lush greenery of one of this city's finest, rarely mentioned locales. If you'd like continue to follow your animal instincts, 32ö lounge on Second Street hosts Zoobilee 2003's afterparty, called Wild Life. Grrrr.
Zoobilee 2003, Thu., June 12, 6-11 p.m., $175-$600, Philadelphia Zoo, 3400 W. Girard Ave., 215-243-5225 (reservations required).
