Amid a blitz of city singles events -- all centered around a bar and a bunch of strangers -- one stands out. Bella, the brightly designed den at 20th and Lombard owned by Ali Waks, has found a twist to the same old formula. Here's the deal: You (if you're a girl, that is) sign up or just show up -- with your ex. That's right -- the one you decided wasn't quite your sort, but whose number's still in your cell. Be nice: See, he's your ticket to the happy-hour shindig, filled with other girls and their recommended exes.
In a world where a personal recommendation is higher praise than all else, how much more valuable is a personal introduction. The trick: Avoid any couples who can't stop whispering to one another; instead, make for the gregarious group in the corner and clink glasses in honor of the specially created Ex cocktail: Absolut Vanilla, mixed with cranberry and orange juices, Razzmatazz and triple sec.
Its cocktails are inventive, the atmosphere's relaxed and -- if Ex-Exchange didn't have enough to recommend it -- this modern take on the singles-go-round even doubles as the perfect way to break up: If an otherwise decent guy just won't quite get the message, take him along to the party, pass him a cocktail, point out the eye candy, then leave him to it.
Ex-Exchange, every Thu., 5-8 p.m., Bellabar, 2000 Lombard St., 215-985-3222.
