Well, it is, and it ain't, but one thing's for sure, love can be a difficult process. In an attempt to discuss and rethink the trials and tribulations of love, Sister's Sanctuary and the Cultural Nationalist Brotherhood will host a black relationship healing retreat this weekend. Focusing on healing the pain of the past and reconciling the good and the bad of old relationships, the forum aims to help folks take a good hard look at the reasons behind relationship woes -- and start anew. It's an interactive approach utilizing honest dialogue; not a singles mixer or dating event. Exploring every relationship, not just hubby and wife, the retreat addresses interactions between mothers and sons, fathers and daughters and every relationship in between as moderator Reuben Jones tries to navigate through this touchy territory. Coming together as a community, the forum participants will examine the media's image of black love through songs, television and movies, dissecting stereotypes and defining how these portrayals affect the psyche. The discussion will also dive head first into the not-so-distant past, examining the effects of slavery on the black family. Be ready for frank dialogue on everything from the "baby boy" syndrome to the "What have you done for me lately?" effect. Expect mature themes, group activities and of course, refreshments served to counter the hot and controversial subject matter. Bring your mama, your brother or even a friend: It's time to talk.
Black Relationship Healing Retreat, Sat., June 14, 12:30-4 p.m., free, The Rotunda, 4014 Walnut St.. 215-235-9659.
