Orchestras and Balconies Gala

The City of Hope Cancer Center charities have not only devoted what seems like a lifetime to fighting the Big C by discovering new treatments, education and raising funds; they have also looked at diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases with passion and care. Anyone who helps the Los Angeles-based center do that is a saint, right? So then give it up for hair-and-fashion doyenne Joan Pileggi of Pileggi Boutique and Norman Vosko of BOSS Hugo Boss who will be feted with City of Hope's grandest philanthropic honor, The Spirit of Life Award, next week as part of the first Orchestras and Balconies gala. Pileggi -- owner and operator of a multitude of Pileggi and Giovanni & Pileggi salons -- will dedicate her award to the memory of her husband, Vincent; Vosko, the first U.S. owner of a BOSS store and CEO of Fashion Works, has made cancer causes an ongoing personal project. The event, featuring fashion previews, cocktails and live music and co-sponsored by Fashion Group International, is Philly's latest annual gala to benefit pediatric, prostate and breast cancer research, and the organizations' first foray in what promises to be a long, fruitful relationship with the area. Maybe they'll open a City of Hope in Philly, as has been talked about. Location is not an issue. The City of Hope resides wherever work is being done to battle serious disease. That's where your money should be.

Orchestras and Balconies Gala, Wed., June 25, 6-9 p.m., $100, Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, Broad and Walnut sts., 800-344-8169.
