You catch more flies with honey right? Certainly. With that in mind, BEBASHI (Blacks Educating Blacks About Sexual Health Issues), and Squarebiz present Dancin' in the Streets, an outdoor charity and awareness event for National HIV Testing Day. In an attempt to spread their wealth of knowledge about HIV and AIDS, dispel myths and stop ignorance, BEBASHI will be on-site in front of the Art Museum to provide information and free private testing (yes, on-site!). Since being diagnosed in 1991 with HIV, NBA legend Magic Johnson has become a poster boy for success through treatment. The billboards plastered all over the city speak volumes: "For me, staying healthy with HIV is about a few basic things: a positive attitude, partnering with my doctor and taking my medicine every day." Most importantly, a myriad of options do exist for folks with no insurance and no money; the treatment door remains open. Despite Magic's success, HIV and AIDS continue to have a disproportionate and devastating impact on people of color, so BEBASHI hopes to talk about why. Livening things up, the Sunkist Sunlab hosts a talent competition for all MCs, vocalists, artists and dancers, complete with prizes. The sounds for the evening should be nothing short of extraordinary, with DJ Rich Medina tearing up the turntables alongside live percussion. And of course, there will be oodles and oodles of tasty treats, water ice and plenty of fluid to keep everyone ready to party -- and learn.
Dancin’ in the Streets, Fri., June 27, 7 p.m., free, steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, 26th St. and the Parkway, 215-769-3561.
