Orchestra Baobab

In the history of unlikely comebacks, a special chapter should be reserved for Senegal's Orchestra Baobab, whose Specialist in All Styles (World Circuit) comes a mere 15 years after their demise. As evidenced by the delirious 1982 record Pirate's Choice, recently reissued and doubled in length, the pioneering world-music outfit fashioned a seamless blend of traditional African music and Cuban rhythms. Two decades later, even though some members hadn't picked up an instrument since the band's 1986 split, the fusion is just as potent, and, thanks to the still-growing popularity of Cuban and African music, even better suited to travel. Orchestra Baobab always stuck to its roots as a nightclub house band, and The Kimmel Center has wisely opted to remove the floor seating to make room for dancing feet (as they will for upcoming concerts by Yerba Buena and Bembeya Jazz). You'll have the option to sit down, but don't expect to use it.

Wed., July 9, 7:30 p.m., $27, The Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.
