The Fall

They are everything you"d want in an underground legend: cryptic, unpredictable and criminally under-heard. Members come and go with blinding speed (imagine a Spinal Tap where everyone plays drums), leaving only lead ranter Mark E. Smith in place. Smith, who"s looked like an old man since he was 20, finished his last Philadelphia show several years ago by antagonizing his bandmates until they left the stage -- all except his then-girlfriend, keyboardist Julia Nagle, whom he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a few days later. But even if this current tour has already seen its first personnel change, word is that The Fall are on their best behavior, relatively speaking. The new Country on the Click, whose U.S. release has inexplicably been delayed several months, finds MES and company in fine form, turning out the king of simultaneously shambolic and propulsive songs that only they (whoever they are) can. Even if this show goes the way of their last, you can guarantee it won"t be like any other you"ve been to.

Wed., July 9, 8 p.m., $14, with Vexers, The TLA, 334 South St., 215-922-1011.
