Brief Interviews with Hideous Men

theater

Who are these guys and why are they wearing bags on their heads? 1812 Productions jump-starts their season of comedy with Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, an adaptation of David Foster Wallace's short stories, in which multiply talented Scott Greer and Tony Lawton play multiple men with multiple problems.

Wallace (of Infinite Jest fame; it's one of those epic novels you don't want to drop on your foot) wrote these stories, which have been adapted for the stage as a series of interviews. Greer had the idea and was then aided and abetted by playwright Michael Hollinger, director Aaron Posner and co-star Lawton, revealing just how funny and, well, hideous guys can be, especially when they're talking to women about sex.

The show opens as a Fringe event and continues until Sept. 20 as part of 1812's regular season. This young company, under the astute direction of Jen Childs and Pete Pryor, has made a huge hit in town (with their sold-out Batboy ending last year's season), and this promises a lively start to both the Fringe and the season in 1812's ongoing mission to make Philly laugh.

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, Aug. 22-Sept. 20, $20, 1812 Productions at Smoke, 233 N. Bread St.; tickets available at 215-592-9560, or the Philadelphia Fringe box office, Third and Arch sts., 215-413-1318.
