As composer and keyboardist, Wansel could've been content making hits on Philly International for Patti and Teddy or local pals Jean Carn and Phyllis Hyman. But he had to go and spoil it by making moody, space-soul LPs like 1976's Life on Mars whose icy ambience and thick, thematic funk ushered in acid jazz and neo-soul.
