This weekend and next, 166 local artists will celebrate the fourth anniversary of Philadelphia Open Studio Tours by once again displaying their waresand giving people a chance to find what treasures are hidden in their neck of the woods. On Oct. 11 and 12, artists with workspaces east of Broad Street will welcome visitors; those with studios west of Broad will do so on Oct. 18 and 19.
The first weekend features the work of Teresa Chang, who designs and creates high-end porcelain dinnerware and serving pieces. She fuses simplicity with elegance in her work, and insists, Every piece has to be functional. Chang's studio is at 340 N. 12th St., suite 317. Michelle Lipson designs wood furniture, often custom-made: working with people drives its own inspiration, she says. Her works have curved features and soft lines that are distinguishable in any space. She'll show her work that weekend at 1215 Frankford Ave.
During weekend two, catch Tremain Smith, a collage artist who uses oils, metal, beeswax and pigment on wood. Smith, whose studio is at 4520 Locust St., says people bring a good energy into the workspace that lingers well after the event has ended.
