Sunday nights won't be the same without the option of a Cherry Tree Music Co-op concert. After 28 years of weekly shows during the cooler months, the Co-op has officially ceased operations. However many of the volunteers have taken their energy, expertise and equipment to a new home, the Calvary Center, where the Tree's outreach program, Crossroads, has been adopted and expanded. The Tree's last hurrah comes in a farewell concert which brings back original musician-members of the Co-op like Juggernaut String Band and soprano sax player Ken Ulansey, who recalls, The Cherry Tree wasn't really, at first, a place for concerts. It was a place to explore ideas about neighborhood, community, family and fellowship, all done with the classiest touches of joy and good humor. We never really cared who was playing, knowing that they'd almost always delight and surprise us. Also on the farewell roster: Bluesman Ted Estersohn (another early presence), along with harmonica maven Saul Broudy. Fiddler and harpist Jay Ansill was among the second wave of Cherry Tree folks, often accompanying former Philadelphian Priscilla Herdman and national guitar champ Rolly Brown. Caryl P. Weiss -- equal parts shantysinger and Kerrville songwriter -- was another constant presence who will return for this evening of community and music.
Sun., Oct 26, 7:30 p.m., $5-$10, Calvary Center, 48th St. and Baltimore Ave., 215-729-1028.
