Bernard Collins hosts Oral Traditions, a music and poetry affair with an open mic. Nuyorican Keith Roach, poetess Stephanie Renee, H. Alonzo Jennings with guitarist Joe Steele Michael O’Hara, Serena Saunders, Steve Paul and Tony Brown headline the show. P.S.: Ms. Renee has a new CD: Tuning Forked Tongue. Sat., Nov. 8, 8 p.m., free, The Rotunda, 4012 Walnut St., 215-573-3234, www.foundationarts.org.
Then rest up, because Wednesday is a big day. To say Ms. Tiffany Bacon’s Side Gig is packed to the rafters with talent is an understatement. We’re always happy to see Dat Boy Dave, Tiffany Jones and Jafar Baron, sure, but it’s New York City poet/actor/activist muMs and Philly’s own artistic everywoman, Cassandre Xavier, who take top honors. There’s an open mic, so MCs, dancers, musicians, actors, comedians and poets should arrive early to be heard. Wed., Nov. 12, 8 p.m.-midnight, $5, Club Flow, 700 N. Columbus Blvd., 215-629-3569. The best reason to check out The City Paper Choice Party is to celebrate the return of this year’s ìWorst Loss to the Philly Hip-Hop Sceneî award-winner, The Remedy’s DJ Cosmo Baker. Nostalgia shall fill the air and bodies will take to the dancefloor. Wed., Nov. 12, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., free, Denim, 1712 Walnut St., 215-735-6700. And then there’s TurnFable, strutting back into the night with formidable DJ tag team, Adam Bomb and Tactics (hear DJ Tactics every Saturday night on Pure Elementz with Jay-Ski, 2-4 a.m., Philly 103.9 The Beat). Army of the Pharoahs’ King Syze hosts. Wed., Nov. 12, 10 p.m.-2 a.m., $5, The Hot Point, 622 S. Sixth St., 215-625-3523, JustOne001@hotmail.com. Wow, the Art Sanctuary brings in the heavy hitters for November’s hip-hop month celebrations. Rah Digga, Medusa and Supernatural perform, but it’s the intriguing panel discussion, State of the Art: Hip-Hop Journalism, that will light up the night. Talking it up will be Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (former editor in chief of The Source), Rolling Stone’s Touré, Wendy Day (founder of the nonprofit organization Rap Coalition), James Spady, Biff Warren and Tonya Pendleton. Wed., Nov. 12, 7 p.m., 10 p.m. concert, $10 (under 17 free), Church of the Advocate, 18th and Diamond sts., 215-232-4485, www.artsanctuary.org.
