Relāche

There are plenty of eager consumers of new art out there. Cutting edge visual artists, filmmakers and choreographers attract steady, ardent audiences. For whatever reason, new music lags behind the other disciplines, at least as measured by audience size. The Relāche ensemble has an interesting strategy for dealing with this problem. Relāche continues to present lively, challenging and entertaining works by living composers as they have for more than 20 years, but in the past few seasons they are participating in more collaborations with other media. This weekend, the group will premiere a new score for the 1955 silent film of Helen Levitt, "In the Street," with music by Ikue Mori. Mori will join Relāche members, on drum machine and other electronics. Surrealist and Dadaist films by René Clair and Man Ray will also be screened, with live accompaniment, and film music by Kurt Weill and Joseph Hauer round out the program.

Fri, Dec. 5, 7:30 p.m., $20, The Wilmington Music School, 4101 N. Washington St., Wilmington, Del., 302-762-1132; Sat., Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m., and Sun., Dec. 7, 3 p.m., $20, Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St., 215-569-9700.
