Jazz
Although not billed as such, this weekend's schedule at Chris' Jazz Café offers a study in contrasts. On Friday, the club features alto saxophonist Vincent Herring, a player whose powerfully extroverted style has evoked comparisons to both John Coltrane and, more appropriately, Cannonball Adderley. On Saturday, introversion takes over in the form of tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, whose snakelike lines and searching phrases have prompted visions of Warne Marsh and Wayne Shorter. Name-dropping aside, Herring and Turner represent something like a yin and yang of contemporary saxophone approaches. See both shows for a comprehensive snapshot of the modern jazz mainstream.
Vincent Herring with John Swana, Fri., Jan. 30, 9 p.m., $10; Mark Turner with Jon Gordon, Sat., Jan. 31, 9 p.m., $12, Chris’ Jazz Café, 1421 Sansom St., 215-568-3131.
