With Valentine's Day creeping up and the pinup-doll revue of the Suicide Girls hitting town, Philly's being bombarded with images of sex. Now, after a well-received jaunt last year, the Sex Workers' Art Show will once again tour the U.S.; it'll come to Philly this week, challenging sexuality, gender and the place of the dollar in the world of the sex industry. A traveling caravan of sorts, the art show puts on a cabaret-style happening incorporating music, striptease and visual and performance art, allowing audiences to actually get a chance to re-examine some of their mores and see the art and thought behind what many sex workers do. Those thinking it'll be a night of gratuitous T&A may be in for a shock. Though steeped in visual sexual stimulants, the show will also have sex educators, prostitution rights activists, filmmakers, authors and even (the often overlooked) phone sex operators, providing insight into their personal and professional lives. While it promises to be an evening in the world of erotica, the Sex Workers' Art Show will surely give you more to think about than a little bump 'n' grind.
Sex Workers’ Art Show, Thu., Feb. 5, 9:30 p.m., $7, Doc Watson’s, 216 S. 11th St., www.plainparade.org.
