At first, this First Friday event, girlZrock/tranZpunk, sounds closer to David Cronenberg taking on The Matrix. That is, until you prick up an ear toward the evening's music. Beyond the good looks of Manhattan cable-access hostess Yolanda -- the transgendered toast of N.Y.C.'s StoneWall Society and occasional guest of Merce Cunningham's dance troupe -- there's a beating, bruised heart filled with creepy folk-cabaret music and romantic lyrics. And you may chuckle at Philadelphia's LotSix, her uniform and her silly slide presentation. But you can't help but find her lesbian-delicious, laugh-out-loud lyrics well suited to her lo-fi Linn-drummed synth-Muzak. Then there's Tara Lynne, a singer/songwriter whose aching lyrics are only second in passion to her ferocious, multi-octave singing style. "I left Philly in '99 with a ton of stage and studio experience, a lot of support and a slew of not-so-excellent songs," says Lynne, now of New York, about local live gigs and her debut effort, Step! "But I needed a kick in the ass as a songwriter -- and a human -- [that] New York provides. This city'll chew you up and spit you out as quick as kiss you and that is fine wood to craft songs with." While longtime-Lynne-ites will judge as the towering Tara debuts tunes from her soon-to-be-released second CD, All Eyes to the Sky, the rest of you can stare in awe and ponder how it is you missed her majesty previously.
