For the second week in a row, The Department of Recreation and Person-L Management’s Poetry and Hip Hop in Da Hood makes the paper. Open to youth and youthful folks (13 to 25), the workshops allow participants to gather and learn about the music and arts biz. This week’s guests are poet Linda DiFeterici of Cavalcade of Poetry and producer Shu Baby of Shu Baby Music Production. Thu., Feb. 19, 7 p.m., free, Myers Recreation Center, 58th and Kingsessing sts., DearaP@aol.com.
From the creative young minds that put B Informed magazine (www.binformedmag.com) on newsstands in January, comes the monthly RocRite, where b-boys and b-girls come to dance, compete, network and develop their craft. While the foundation of RocRite is the art of the dance, there are multiple platforms for "urban" art and culture at the event. This month, artist Saga Moor exhibits his work and conducts a live installation while Byu battles Cracker Zacks (LOZ) and Xkwizit battles Danny (LRC) on the dancefloor. Stringing it all together, Sesion31's DJ Skeme will be on the ones and twos with nothing but the true hip-hop. Sat., Feb. 21, 3-8 p.m., $7, First Unitarian Church, 22nd and Chestnut sts., 215-569-2337, info@rocrite.net, www.rocrite.net. A portion of the proceeds benefits the Jessica Karrat Dance Scholarship Fund.
Drumroll. That sweet something everyone's been missing roars back into funky full effect, complete with Jolly Rancher shots. Yes indeedy, Square Biz's Candyland returns each Sunday with the Ill Vibe Collective's DJ Statik, who waxes nostalgic alongside "the 'fro, big ?uestlove" (when he's in town). It's the same vibe -- candy, games, goodies and excellent music -- and less dancefloor. Sun., Feb. 22, 10 p.m.-2 a.m., free, The Latest Dish, 613 S. Fourth St., squarebizdishes@aol.com, www.squarebiz.org. P.S.: Don't forget about the women in the arts showcase, FlyJawn. For more information, log onto www.squarebiz.org/flyflyer.htm.
