The Return of Philly Boxing

In a city full of historic buildings, there is only one structure that has a world-renown first name -- Legendary -- as in the Legendary Blue Horizon.

Just a few years ago, the Blue -- an old mansion cum Moose Lodge cum pugilism palace, beloved globally as the best fight venue this side of the Colosseum -- was in danger of falling apart. But thanks to $3 million in funding and the hard work of its owners, Vernoca Michael and Carol Ray, the Blue is back and better than ever.

"We have a series of 10 fights this year," says the unsinkable Michael. "That's more than we've ever had."

Inimitable fight promoter Damon Feldman is among the Blue's new blood. Feldman, a former boxer who's brought us the likes of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, is bringing his first card to North Broad on Sat., March 6, with a main event featuring former world heavyweight champ Bruce Seldon (who hasn't stepped in the ring since losing to that ear-biter Mike Tyson in 1996). Seldon will take on Pittsburgh's Gary Winom. The undercard will feature Said Quali as well as some of the "Champions of Tomorrow" from Philadelphia.

Feldman knows a little about the Blue. He was 9-0 there as a fighter.

"It's big," says Feldman. "I am really excited. This is where I fought, and it is a real good opportunity for me, because of the legendary of it. Promoting a show here is incredible."

The Return of Philly Boxing, Sat., March 6, 7:30 p.m., $30-$60, Blue Horizon, 1314 N. Broad St., 215-763-0500.
