The Uneasy Chair

theater

Evan Smith has given the contentious landlady-tenant relationship a turn-of-the-century spin in The Uneasy Chair, a comedy of manners straight out of the drawing rooms of Victorian London. With characters named Amelia Pickles, Josiah Wickett, Nellie Thimble and Mr. Darlington, The Uneasy Chair, presented by 1812 Productions this month, clearly revels in the language and spirit of Victoriana. Miss Amelia Pickles is a proper English lady running a boarding house, and Josiah Wickett is a retired military man looking for a comfortable place to call home. Pickles and Wickett's prickly thicket of a relationship develops as they bicker over matters great and small. Their squabbles, natch, lead to love, matrimony and biting wit. The Uneasy Chair's New York run had Roger Rees and Dana Ivey in the starring roles, and Philly's premiere has two equally talented actors following suit. David Howey and Maureen Torsney-Weir are the rent-crossed lovers.

The Uneasy Chair, March 26-April 25, $10-$25, The Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St., 215-592-9580.
