Of all the grad students who ever crossed paths with Jacques Derrida at the Sorbonne, it's safe to say that only one of them went on to do burlesque-influenced performance art in Philadelphia. That one grad student was Bonnie MacAllister, whose original spoken-word/dance "burlesque spectacle" will be performed by her avant-pop go-go dancers this Sunday at Philadelphia's newest (and weirdest) live music/performance venue, the Church of Divine Energy (C.O.D.E.).
Forsaking academia and returning to this side of the Atlantic, MacAllister has been doing live performance, poetry and experimental film in the Philadelphia area since 2000. Sunday night's spectacle stands to combine all three: Besides the dancing and poetry, the evening will open with MacAllister's 1999 short film, Fog Full of Grace. Drinks are included in the price of admission, folks dressed in burlesque attire get in for free, and the venue a cross between the Fakehouse (R.I.P.) and the Branch Davidian compound is a spectacle unto itself.
Avant Pop Go-Go, Sun., June 27, 2:30 p.m., $5 (free with burlesque attire), C.O.D.E., 4800 Woodland Ave., 215-952-0180, www.churchofdivineenergy.com.
