What does it take to get through school these days? Vision? Hard work? How about writing implements?
Much as it's depressing to admit, there's a basic need for supplies as the school district gears up for the fall. So, starting today, there's a citywide campaign to bring in any spare well, anything that can supplement the meager basics. The Tools for Schools information point, in the center court of the Gallery, will have a collection bin where you can leave items, and a long, updated list of what exactly is needed. (While the kids may prefer a pair of New Balances, donations of technological hardware and books may be more useful in the long run.)
Don't feel like hitting the mall any time soon? Well, you still have the option of donating cash very useful. (Checks can be mailed to Tools for Schools, c/o Wachovia, 123 S. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19109.) All donations will be used for kids who really need the boost. If you want to know more about the drive, Paul Vallas, CEO of the school district, will be on hand to explain its purpose at the kick-off event. And, for those who still need convincing, a "dream mural" comprising artworks by third- to eighth-graders will adorn the walls, demonstrating what they want out of their futures.
Tools for Schools drive, Thu., July 15, noon, collection runs until Sept. 12, The Gallery, Mall Level, Center Court, Ninth and Market sts.
