spoken word
For a few years, people have wondered exactly where spoken word fits in the grand scheme of artistry. Some say it is an extension of hip-hop, and others, like Stefan Jordan and Johnny Gibbs, classify it as a way of life. The two business associates are collaborating on a documentary that will follow a spoken-word artist throughout his or her everyday doings. It sounds like an urban rip-off of America's Next Top Model or The Real World, but the difference is the creators hope to actually reflect reality. Auditions are being held through a series of competitions at black-owned facilities around the city. Those winners will then battle each other for the top spot to star in the documentary. Already slated to compete are Maleek Defreek, who has slammed mics from Jamaica to the Carolinas, and Rhapsody, who has graced The Five Spot and October Gallery. This weekend, the process continues in search of the ones who can out-word and out-slam.
"A Night of Black Passion," Sun., Aug. 29, 6 p.m., $15-$20, The Loft, 7138 Germantown Ave., 267-408-6255.
