In recent months, local hip-hop events have retreated back to reflecting the entire culture, not just the heavy concentration on music. Members of the GeoClan World family are taking it a step further and using hip-hop to connect generations. Informally founded in 1995, GeoClan became official in 2003. Their mission statement includes a commitment to cultivation of art and culture by providing people with outlets for creativity, empowerment and a shared sense of community. In addition to their opinionated and borderline-controversial e-zine, Geoclan uses various events and parties to get their message heard. They have chosen Penn's historic, newly restored Carriage House to host HomeGrown Eclectic, a reception/gathering that will combine food, drinks, music, interactive painting, artwork and film. "We wanted to do something that everyone could relate to. This is going to be good fun with a family feeling. There is a little bit of everything," says Haile Campbell, public relations director for GeoClan, as well as one of its regular columnists. Local up-and-coming acts United Soul, Tangible Truth and Elixir among others will represent on the mic, while artists Ollie Y. Davis, Square Biz's own Stacey Wilson and more display expressive pieces. A highlight will be a film installation from filmmaker Frankie Villegas. Campbell summarizes, "This event is not associated with negativity, and it unites the beautiful lifestyle of our generation, while handing down the hip-hop legacy."
HomeGrown Eclectic presented by GeoClan, Sat., Aug. 28, 6-11 p.m., freewill donation, all ages, Carriage House, University of Pennsylvania, 3907 Spruce St., www.geoclan.com.
