HIP-HOP

Ladies Love Hip-Hop

DJs Ultraviolet and Sesi are counterbalance to those late-night La Tazza sausage parties with their monthly Ladies Love Hip-Hop series. They'll be spinning classics, underground favorites and bangin' hits. The night isn't about them being women, it's about them rockin' the tables and representing right.

FOLK

The Kingston Trio

With Bob Shane sidelined by a heart attack earlier this year, the Kingston Trio is down to zero original members. Still, some of these ringers played "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A." and "Scotch and Soda" alongside Shane for close to 30 years. They must be doing something right.

Thu., Aug. 26, 8 p.m., free, Cooper River Park, North Park Drive, Pennsauken, N.J., www.ccparks.com.

HIP-HOP

Hip-Hop, Spoken, Vocal Sounds and Fashion Explosion

Sadly, youth violence has dominated neighborhoods around the tri-state this past year. Presented by the Mayor's Office of Community Services for Safer Schools & Safer Communities, this event is about taking a stand for future generations. The scenic Horticulture Center will set the stage for hip-hop rebel Hasan Salaam, freedom fighters Bohemian Fifth and jazzy souls Divine Essence, along with various fashion and industry elite.

HIP-HOP

Illatropolis

Staying on the constant grind is the Illatropolis crew, as they present four MCs who do more than rap — they actually entertain. GQ, SlimDSM, Sleep-E and Digs Darklighter will pull out all the antics, including a few crowd dives and freestyles that go on and on and on and on.

Fri., Aug. 27, 9:30 p.m., $5 (ladies free before 11 p.m.), La Tazza, 108 Chestnut St., 215-922-7322.

ROCKABILLY

Big Sandy

Take a little neo-rockabilly, a touch of Western swing and some sizzlin' boogie, and you've got a night of great, dance-ready music. The suave, swingin' and unabashedly retro Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys are masters at embracing sounds of the past while gleefully bringing them into the present — something they do with plenty of panache on their latest, Rockin' Big Sandy.
— Nicole Pensiero
Thu., Aug. 26, 9 p.m., $14, NXNW, 7165 Germantown Ave., 215-248-1000.

ROCK/POP/BENEFIT

S.A.F. Music Fest

Through events like this seven-band concert, the Sleeping Angels Fund raises money to help ease the burden on families who lose their children to SIDS and other sad circumstances. Among the acts doing a good deed are The Janet Bressler Band (accompanied by The Shake Charmers Belly Dancers), The Scream Clan, Lifted and The Helots.
— Patrick Rapa
Sat., Aug. 28, 7 p.m., $10, Doc Watson's Pub, 216 S. 11th St., 215-922-3427.

HIP-HOP

Slam Bush

As you read in CP last week, some members of the hip-hop community are using their powers of influence to expel George W with Slam Bush. The national rhyme contest pits MCs against each other as they spit their best anti-Bush barbs for a $500 cash prize, plus the chance to compete for $5,000 at a national battle coinciding with the presidential debates. Organizers will be heavily registering, hoping to secure the underground hip-hop vote in November.
— Deesha Dyer
Wed., Sept. 1, 9 p.m., $7, The Five Spot, 5 S. Bank St., 267-307-5050.
