National Geographic "Celebrate Photography Tour"

So what if digital photography has been relentlessly marketed as a dinky little feature appealing to picture-phone owners and shutter-happy tourists? It’s way more valuable for taking film exposure and processing out of the mix, so amateurs can replicate dramatic nature photography without technological pitfalls. If you don’t believe me, just ask National Geographic, who this week brings the "Celebrate Photography Tour," a digital-image expo, through town, featuring an in-depth exhibit of work published in the magazine and a hands-on technical information center, where visitors can get a grip on the basic functions of these cameras. Renowned photographers from the magazine will be inside the touring 18-wheeler to discuss how to take more daring shots with simple digital equipment. Plus, if you think you’ve got the skills but are just lacking in beautiful subject matter, you can even submit your best shots to a national photo contest, with prizes such as a trip for two to Tuscany up for grabs.

National Geographic "Celebrate Photography Tour," Fri., Oct. 15, noon-6 p.m., Sat.-Sun. Oct. 16-17, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., free, Circuit City, 9701 E. Roosevelt Blvd., 215-464-1710.
