Hip-hop
Every year, Docta Shock's Philly Urban Legend Awards has an eye on the future while recognizing area hip-hop pioneers who fought for respectfor themselves, for the cultureat a time when it wasn't as trendy to pick up the mic. Originally founded for the underground crowd, the PULA has now progressed to include radio and retail hip-hop, as well as R&B. Next year, Shock is hoping to expand it to graffiti artists and community leaders. One of the first award recipients and queen bee of Philly radio, Lady B, will return as the host this year, as they honor Larry Larr, Tuff Crew, Kim Graves, Doug Henderson Jr., Bruce Webb, and Grand Tone. Representing the new school, scholarly rapper Ohene will spit a few tracks from his CD The Rapademics, and local Christian hip-hop artist Hansoul will bless the crowd with an inspirational performance. FYI: This is BYOB affair.
Fri., Nov. 5, 7-11 p.m., $10, Wilarie's Cultural & Performing Arts Complex, 1621 W. Cecil B. Moore Ave., 215-748-2360.
