For amateur foodies and self-professed chefs manqués, it seems nothing holds a greater draw than a celebrated cook's kitchen. Since they don't actually ever get the chance to go inside, they imagine a Wonka-esque workplace with rivers of sauce and heavy vines winding around the ceiling dropping fruit. This delusion even assists their enjoyment of dining at said chef's restaurant.
So what Jean-Marie Lacroix proposes this month threatens this halo effect: He invites diners into his workshop.
Pitching it as the ultimate "dinner and a show," the 2001 James Beard Award winner welcomes anyone with a Wednesday reservation at 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. to enjoy a personal tour of his kitchen in Lacroix at the Rittenhouse. See the fervent herb-chopping and dessert-decorating, dispel the notions of oompah loompahs in gravy boats, and, best of all, get the chance to taste dishes that are still at the "experimental" stage. It's free with a reservation; just remember to mention "Lacroix Live" when you book. And, while it may seem dreamy, remember: The knives really are sharp, the tempers really flammable. So look, listen, learn, but maybe resist the urge to touch.
Lacroix Live, every Wednesday in January, arrive one hour before your 6 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. reservation, Lacroix at the Rittenhouse, 210 W. Rittenhouse Square, call 215-790-2533 for reservations.
