Jack DeJohnette Latin Project

jazz

Latin music is all about the percussion: exuberant, driving and heavily rhythmic. Jack DeJohnette, one of jazz's most consistently innovative drummers, dwells at the opposite end of the spectrum. His work with the Keith Jarrett Trio is subtle, hovering around the edges of the beat, teasing out the sonic potential of his kit rather than merely keeping time. So teaming with conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, timbales player Luisito Quintero and pianist Edsel Gomez will both challenge DeJohnette's rhythmic instincts and free him to abandon the beat at whim. Clarinetist Don Byron is one of very few players quick-witted (not to mention courageous) enough to handle the melodic chores over top of this ensemble. Byron and DeJohnette have proved a nimble teaming in the past, carefully attuned to one another's evolving ideas. Number yourself among the fortunate: Philly is one of only eight cities on this tour, which follows the group's debut at last year's Montreal Jazz Festival.

Sat., Feb. 5, 8 p.m., $21-$43, Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
