Love at First Sniff

pet project

For all dog and cat owners who would like to prevent their pets from propagating the neighborhood without resorting to severities that Bob Barker might condone, The Dog & Cat House in South Philly has the answer: make an honest canine/feline out of them. All four-legged couplings, whether for reasons of love or premature-kitten-type necessity, will be officiated for pretend-legality on June 25.

Owner and proprietor Ed Gross has hosted a canine costume contest and a Christmastime Open House on the premises of his "pet supplies emporium," which opened in 2003. For this take on a traditional Saturday-afternoon summer wedding, he has mailed over 120 invitations and hopes to attract new curiosity-seekers. The event will feature miniature bridal gowns and tuxedos available for sale and rental, a "meet and greet" for the not-yet-engaged, photo opportunities at an altar and wedding certificates.

The ceremonies will take place in the store's courtyard garden. Dress for owners is casual. Pet unions of all preferences will be honored (with no checks for gender).

Doggie Nuptials, Sat., June 25, 2-3:30 p.m., The Dog & Cat House, 1911 E. Passyunk Ave., 215-467-7671.
