For the Kids

Rock/pop

Paul Green may not have sold a lot of tickets to that documentary, but that don't mean nothing. "Even when I tell you how much I believe Rock School will become a home entertainment cult classic when it comes out on DVD in September, it's all about the kids," says Green in an e-mail. But let's move on. While student guitarist/Lancaster-born Quaker punk Madi Diaz kick-starts her band Talk Radio with an eponymous CD and a World Café Live gig, Green is backing a bimonthly show at the Troc. First up: students like those in the rawking Flamingo; teachers like Yanni Papadopoulos (in Stinking Lizaveta) and Ween's Claude Coleman, the leader of the weirdly funky Amandla. And Thom Lessner, a Green pal notorious for his Rock School poster art, who's made a Space 1026-based career out of modern primitivism. That same naïfish folk-artiness can be found in the strummed-hard quirk of Sweatheart, his mostly acoustic team-up with fellow singers Rose Luardo and Hot Tanya. Look for Lessner's odd texts to have the same cartoon bubbleheaded-ness as his painted characters.
