Two-Wheeled Treks

Riding around on a bike and then talking about it is art? When it's done by the Brit-boys of Lone Twin. Adapting a conceit first used in Brussels, Gregg Whelan and Gary Winters will spend each of five days riding around Philadelphia on Brompton folding bikes — interacting with pedestrians, motorists and other bicyclists for six hours at a pop — and reporting back each day with accumulating tales of their adventures. They'll spin a water bottle at the end of each performance to determine the direction they'll spend the next day riding. "You learn a lot. You learn everything," says Whelan of exploring a city on bicycle. "You pick up the temperament of the city. It kind of shows itself in the levels of aggression, how fierce the roads are, how polite the people are." While they don't know anything about Philly, they figure it can't be worse than London, where "drivers are aggressive in a way that feels vindictive. … Everywhere we've been, we've had people throw things at us. You kind of show yourself not to be of that place … a moving target." Show up each day, if just to see how badly they've been beaten.

To the Dogs, Sept. 6 -10, 9:30 p.m., $20, Fringe Cabaret, 829-51 N. American St., starting at 12 minutes and increasing in 12-minute intervals to 60 minutes on the last day.
