Top 5 Noshings for the Jewish New Year1 Lunch on the Run
Kibitz in the City
703 Chestnut St., 215-928-1447
This New York-style delicatessen is a veritable heaven with its jumbo black-and-white cookies, apple strudel, babkas, blintzes, rugalach, fat dill pickles, skinned hot dogs, wide selection of Dr. Brown's sodas and sandwiches so overstuffed it takes a crane to lift one. Start spreading the news.
2 Kasha Knish
Kaplan's New Model Bakery
901 N. Third St., 215-627-5288
This tiny corner bakery sells challah to neighboring restaurants N. 3rd and Honey's, but it's best when servicing hungry walk-ins. Kasha, for all you goyim, is mashed buckwheat groats used in Eastern-European dishes like gruel and pancakes. Here it's enveloped in a pocket of dough and oven-baked. Eat it Coney Island-style with spicy mustard or alternate bites with Kaplan's raspberry hamantaschen.
3 Groise Max Sandwich
Klapholz's Kosher Deli
307 York Rd., Jenkintown, 215-886-8600
This enormous double-decker combines a choice of two glatt kosher meats (brisket, corned beef, pastrami, salami, turkey or chopped liver) on toasted rye with spiced coleslaw, onions, hot peppers and creamy Russian dressing. Try it with a side of Rabbi Brisman's sweet potato kugel.
4 Bagel and Fish
Famous 4th Street Deli
700 S. Fourth St., 215-922-3274
Nobody knows kosher like this family-owned deli just south of teen-goth wonderland. The signature bagel-and-fish combo piles lox, whitefish or chopped herring on a patron's mostly toasty bagel of choice. Switch things up by substituting an onion roll or freshly baked bialy.
5 The Works
London Grill
2301 Fairmount Ave., 215-978-4545
So it's Rosh Hashanah, the folks are on their way and the fridge is looking pitifully bare. Take the fam to chef Michael McNally's prix-fixe "Newish Jewish" dinner, running through Oct. 11. The menu includes matzoh ball soup, chickpea-and-lentil tagine, gefilte fish, braised short ribs served over spaghetti and sweet potato-and-apple tzimmes with honeyed, torched marshmallows. (Pssst -- all dishes are available for takeout. Mom will never know the difference.)
