Where to Go to Watch the Games
God loves college football. Case in point, he's giving fans an entire day to clear that sniffling, sneezing, coughing, achy, stuffy-head hangover before the official 2006 Bowl Championship Series kickoff on Mon., Jan. 2. With Temple finishing 0-11 this year and the Eagles season officially trashed a month ago, Philly pride is in the crapper. But that doesn't mean you have to wallow in it. If you've got the day off work or the mustard to skipcough, ahem, sick dayhere's a list of where to go to watch the games with the teams' most ardent supporters. Just keep your mouth shut when they're losing.
MONDAY, JAN. 211 a.m.Outback Bowl: Iowa vs. Florida
Fox and Hound, 160 N. Gulph Rd., King of Prussia, 610-962-0922
Eleven a.m. may sound like the ass-crack of dawn, but three lagers down and you won't know the difference. Iowa fans are passionate about their pigskin, and the Hawkeye faithful regularly meet at the Fox, but don't expect any food or drink specials this early in the morning. The $8 pitcher is de rigeur.
4:30 p.m.Fiesta Bowl: Notre Dame vs. Ohio State
Fox and Hound, 15th and Spruce sts., 215-732-8610
Double love to the ol' Fox. The Center City location played host to more than 150 fans for the last Michigan vs. Ohio State game and General Manager Gordan Hageman is expecting a similar turnout this go-round. The bar will be shilling $2.35 Bud Select drafts and 35-cent wings, and promises a placid mood so long as Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn never finds the end zone. Fightin' Irish, are ya? Pick a pub, any pub, and buy a Guinness or two or 12 until you can't pronounce your first name. Presto! You're one of the gang.
8 p.mSugar Bowl: West Virginia vs. Georgia
McFadden's Restaurant & Saloon, Citizen's Bank Park, 215-952-0300
Don't even think about pussing out for this game because you don't relate to West Virginny folk. So what if they burn couches after home wins and love them some backcountry moonshine? McFadden's is welcoming Southern party boys with $2 domestic beers and well drinks and enough screens to make NASA headquarters look like a pawn shop window. As WVU Philadelphia Alumni president Cristin Dunn says, "If we lose, we might never see something like this again." In other words, hide the kerosene.
TUESDAY, JAN. 38 p.m.Orange Bowl: Penn State vs. Florida State
Mad River Bar & Grille, 126 Chestnut St., 215-923-5553
Buck up as Mad River transforms into Happy Valley, offering all-you-can-drink domestic drafts, mixed well drinks and wine, as well as finger foods like chicken quesadillas and mini crab cakes for $30 a head. The fun starts an hour before the game and there's a $5 discount for PSU alum. Be prepared for the big game flashing across every screen and official PSU music ("Zombie Nation," ho!) blasting during commercial breaks.
WEDNESDAY, JAN. 48 p.m.Rose Bowl: Southern California vs. Texas
Independence Brew Pub, 1150 Filbert St., 215-922-4292
Rumor has it this face-off could be the greatest national championship everespecially when it plays out across 22 screens in the heart of Center City. As an outsider, all you need to know is one thing: "Hook 'em Horns." Save a USC blowout, it's a chant sure to be heard ad nauseum at IBP's Texas Alumni Appreciation Day, which has the upstairs game room booked up and buffeted-out. Game-day deals include $3 drafts and Absolut mixes, plus 30-cent wings. The pub drew about 80 people for Texas' last game against Oklahoma. Alum chapter president Robert Jeter expects the same: "We get together and we get rowdy." Game on.
