"Da Club"
Trina (feat. Mannie Fresh)
You know the story: Young boy, eager and impressionable, meets experienced older woman who wises him up and escorts him into a world he's been chomping at the bit to invade. In "Da Club" that life-changing encounter happens in a strip club, and it's not nostalgic so much as outright nasty. Trina's been working the inverse-thug persona for five years now, and "Da Club" is an extension of that "give 'em what they want for a price" persona. In this song, she's a Pandora's box of gender politics, flaunting her fine body and using it to lure hormonal meatheads into paying her bills and keeping her in diamonds. "If I'ma give it up/ you're gonna give it out" she sneers near the conclusion. So who's playing whom? Even more distracting is how great the song sounds: Mannie Fresh's production threads a pirouetting acoustic guitar lick over a stadium-rattling boom-boom-clap, a whole gang of guys holler an endearing, off-key chorus and Trina herself stretches out words like they were made of putty. It sounds like a love ballad and plays like a crime novel, and when Trina finally leaves with the boy at the end of the song, you can almost see her look back over her shoulder and wink.
