R.A.M.B.O.

Rock/punk

Raise a glass of carrot juice for Tony Pointless—frontman for R.A.M.B.O., senior staffer at R5—as he leaves his city for love and Tempe, Ariz. The excitable anarchist/vegan cyclist is dedicated to a lean, hard, politicized music that's surprisingly theatrical in both its recorded states (Wall of Death/The System, Bring It! along with several split 7-inches) and live performances that've led the quartet around the globe several times. "In my opinion we've created a unique approach to blurring the line between performer and audience with our interactive theatrics," says Pointless.

His role at R5, for those who don't know, has been lifting equipment and baby-sitting its all-ages crowds. "It's about explaining to children who pay homeless men to buy them beer that they can't drink it in or near the church and trying to make them understand that if they enjoy the shows they are attending maybe it would be in their best interests to not engage in behavior that would jeopardize the continuation of shows at the Church." Although Pointless jokes (I think) about being demoted after R5's tenure at 4040 and Rotunda, he calls his work with the booking company the most important thing he's ever done, given its impact on Philadelphia culture.

You could also nominate his band's dedication to the vegan-lifestyle cause ("Our van is converted to run on vegetable oil"), its ill Madball-ish music and its Crass-esque takes on gods, apathy, anarchy and tolerance. What's next for Pointless on the mad theatrical tip? He won't say, beyond: "It's very personal and very Philadelphian."

Tony Pointless' Moving Away Show with R.A.M.B.O., Municipal Waste, Caustic Christ, F.O.D. and H.O.B.A.G., Fri., Jan. 27, 7:30 p.m., $10, First Unitarian Church, 22nd and Chestnut sts., 866-468-7619, www.r5productions.com.
