Beck: MutationsIf Glenn Beck thinks Cindy Sheehan is a "tragedy pimp," wait until he meets Nancy Grace. We're sure she's going to crack that Natalee Holloway case any day now.
The Philly-based, born again, conservative host of nationally syndicated The Glenn Beck Program (heard locally on right-wing WPHT 1210 AM) will soon become a colleague of Grace's, as host of his own talk show on the ticker parade that is CNN Headline News. His one-hour prime-time show will debut in April.
Technically speaking, Beck accused Sheehan of "prostituting [her] son's death." It was his producer Steve "Stu" Burguiere who came up with the "tragedy pimp" zinger. This line of comedy led MSNBC's Keith Olbermann to name Beck "the worst person in the world"a title handed out on every showand encouraged CNN to drop Beck ASAP on his Jan. 19 episode. "Two simple words," said Olbermann, "Michael Savage."
Savage, of course, was the conservative radio host whose TV gig on MSNBC lasted only four months; he was canned after inexplicably erupting into an anti-gay tirade. Beck's style leans more toward comedic monologues than fascist outbursts, but Olbermann's right to be wary.
Beck's politicsalong with his smug attitude and offbeat sense of humorhas a tendency to piss people off. He once said he was tired of the families of 9/11 victims "complaining" all the time. He's also the guy who teamed up with Clear Channel to put together those pro-war "Rallies for America" in 2003. And hey, call and ask him to do his impression of an Indian customer service rep sometime.
City Paper gave the guy a "Biggest Scumbag" CP Choice award in November for his irrational rant against Katrina victims. And if you Google "Glenn Beck" and "scumbag," our site doesn't come up until page seven.
But if you're one of those people who cringes every time Michael Smerconish pops up on some national talk show with the Philly skyline in the background, fear not: Beck will do his CNN gig from Manhattan.
