Hot Cross

Rising from the ashes of screamo powerhouses Neil Perry and Saetia, Hot Cross have been in the chaos construction business for six years now, and they totally shred. In April, they're recor ding their second LP (tentatively titled Risk Revival), which is slated for a fall release. Sunday's show is Hot Cross' only date in February, so get your dose of angst while you can.

El Guapo/Supersystem's Justin Moyer takes on the soiled star-shine of celebrity by singing catty, tattletale songs called "Tim Robbins" and "Christian Slater." In a dress. Edie is the m atted female personae through which he howls like Perry Farrell and makes a chintzy mix of badly mixed art skronk and tin-can Kraftwerk noise that mirrors his drowned-rat appearance. Magnifique.

Misery loves company, and Mark Eitzel's bitter tales taste better with a chaser. Last year's electro-infused Candy Ass has a few classic lines, but it pales beside his work with Peter Buck or American Music Club. On this collaborative tour, he'll share the frontman's burden with Vic Chesnutt, Pedro the Lion's Dave Bazan and Will Johnson of Centro-matic.

Perry's contribution to reggae and dub music is as legendary as his eccentric behavior (and often outlandish appearance). Scratch—who turns 70 next month— ;has worked with everyone from Bob Marley and the Wailers (who were the "house band" at his legendary Black Ark studio in the early '70s) to The Clash. Sinead O'Connor and George Clinton will be among the many voices on Perry's April-due Panic in Babyl on CD. Wednesday's supporting act, NYC-based Dub Is a Weapon, will undoubtedly get the groove started with its trademark live dub mixing and brutal beats.

Catfish Haven make mangy rawk 'n' soul that sounds like the Missouri trailer parks where throaty vocalist George Hunter grew up. And their Please Come Back? Think Otis Redding fronting the Blues Explosion through that remix of Orange. And yes, they do ballads. Be Your Own Pet's frazzled punk songs are Nashville-birthed teenage wasteland anthems that seem irritated and cheered simultaneously. Blame almost-18 singer Jemina Pearl for the smiling snottiness behind Pet's rushed garage blast. Happy Valentine's, asshole.

As always, Supergrass' brand of anthemic but breezy British rock is a bit skewed. Their fifth album, Road to Rouen is ambitious—what with the two string-laden epics—but it moves in a brisk 35 minutes. And while melancholy saloon ballads like "St. Petersburg" and "Low C" leave the most lasting impression, the band leavens the gloom with the Revolver chime of "Kick in the Teeth" and the goof-off instrumental "Coffee i n the Pot."
