One Track Mind

I Don't Wanna Talk About Love No More
Amy Rigby

She's made her name (if not her living) with deadpan state-of-the-relationship addresses like "Beer & Kisses" and "Are We Ever Gonna Have Sex Again?" But on "I Don't Wanna Talk About Love No More," the hardest-rocking song from last year's Little Fugitive, Amy Rigby's had it with tête-à-têtes that go nowhere. She lays out her objections over spirited drums and a crunchy guitar: "I'm tired of emotional discussions/ I'm tired of repercussions/ I'm sick of the O's and the exes/ And the sex and the battles and the battle of the sexes." Nothing kills love like an autopsy. Her irritation grows, culminating in a litany of alternatives: "Let's discuss the hybrid car/ Let's eulogize the mason jar/ Let's analyze roofing tar/ And A Bridge Too Far/ Chicago blues, the right to choose/ A swinging door, the croque monsieur/ The working poor, the war." In under three minutes, Rigby breaks the he-says/she-says cycle, anticipates the awkward silences and fills the void with hot topics, trivia and things that are more boring than love. You won't catch her overanalyzing relationships again. At least not until the next track, "The Year of the Fling."

You can find the first 48 seconds of "I Don't Wanna Talk About Love No More" at www.signaturesounds.com. Or go to World Café Live Saturday. On their Cynical Girls tour, Amy Rigby and Marti Jones are sure to talk about love. A lot.
