"Tactics: Early Video Works

by Dennis Oppenheim, 1970-1974"

Opening reception Sat., April 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m., runs through June 24, Slought Foundation, 4017 Walnut St., 215-222-9050

Calling an artist unconventional seems like a cliche. But it's a phrase that has been used to describe Dennis Oppenheim's strange, ambiguous works. The conceptual performance artist is interested in taking risks and pushing boundaries —both hallmarks of contemporary art. His video works from 1970 to 1974 involve the artist testing the limits of his own body.

Oppenheim employs methods of near self-abuse in his art, posing risks to himself and often freaking out the viewer. One of his films chronicles the expressions on his face as he stands below a three-story building as stones are being dropped from above. Another video finds Oppenheim pulling out his hair and throwing clumps of it at an advancing tarantula.

Profoundly stirring art or meaningless, pretentious crap? You decide.
