Watering Hole

It's Where We Drink

Cherry Street Tavern

129 N. 22nd St., 215-561-5683

The warm lighting, dark wood paneling and constant chatter are best conducive to sleep at the Cherry Street Tavern, even though the bar is loud and smoky, with two televisions on opposite sides of the room and a jukebox that plays music to make the indie kids happy (Kinks, Modest Mouse, Talking Heads).

The interior of the bar is plain and classy. A huge mirror spans the length of the bar, making the room seem twice as large. A second room serves as a quieter, less cancerous area with more tables and space for larger groups. At night, the crowd is young—and I do mean young. What looked like an 11-year-old kid walked past my table, making me do a double take. It was midnight—wasn't it past his bedtime?

Jovial owner Bill Loughery says the bar doesn't serve anyone under 21, and is usually filled with union workers during lunchtime, white collar professionals during happy hour and the college crowd at night. He and his brother Bob have owned the tavern for 15 years.

Since I could easily live on snacks alone, I was thrilled to see that they have a menu: nachos with salsa, cheese and crackers and sandwiches.

If you feel the zzz's coming on, stuff your face. The kitchen is open until midnight.
