THE WEEK IN EATS

Hello Yellow

Four-course meal, Thu., April 20, $50 per person

Six-course meal, Wed.-Sun., April 19-23 (except April 20), $65 per person

Folk troubadour Donovan was just mad about it, and with good reason—it's the world's most exotic and expensive spice. Saffron is indeed yellow, and having been used by early Egyptians as a therapeutic drug, one can safely assume it's also fairly mellow. In honor of this ancient Prozac, Pif is offering a four-course dinner featuring the bitter-flavored flower product. Executive chef and owner David Ansill will prepare dishes of veal, asparagus, scallops and leeks with the seasoning. There's even a saffron cheesecake for dessert. For an extra $15, and with a day's notice, Ansill will prepare you and 7 to 11 of your best friends a custom six-course saffron menu. Pif's Saffron Dinner, Pif, 1009 S. Eighth St., 215-625-2923.

Silly Rabbit

Sat., April 15, 9 a.m.-noon, free

After living off a steady diet of egg salad, cookies and candy for a year, you can see why a 7-foot-tall garden pest might want to wreak havoc on Philadelphia produce. The Reading Terminal's breakfast with the cotton-tailed bandit features egg and cookie decorating for children, a family Easter egg relay and musical entertainment by Easter Parade, a band almost certain to be dressed in some sort of straw-based headwear. The Easter Bunny will be there and available for pictures, so bring your camera. Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch sts., 215-922-2317, www.readingterminalmarket.org.

Fine Diner

Mon., April 17, 7-9 p.m., free

Roadside magazine publisher Randy Garbin will be visiting the Mayfair Diner Monday in what promises to be a lively discussion about coffee, cigarettes and all things fried. Now there is a diet for the modern man. Garbin will also be signing copies of his book More Retro Diner. Attendees will receive free copies of Roadside, dessert on the house and, presumably, free refills on coffee from a waitress who'll call you "sweetie." Roadside Days—A Unique Diner Experience, 7343-73 Frankford Ave., 215-624-4455.
