Wanna hear something funny? The only song I didn't care for on Sky Signal, Audible's stellar debut full-length, was "Five Pirates"too gloomy, too murky, too subtle. And so, of course, that's the one they decided to redo on the new EP, Weekend (Polyvinyl), and, wow, they nailed it. It's all hi-fi and power-poppy, but also spooky and desperate. Throughout, this release is a testament to the Philly quintet's agility: On "Moor's Landing" the male and female voices intertwine tightly and sweetly while delicate noises pop and shudder in the background. "Wildwood" is a straight-up rocker, with a classic chorus and some Jersey Shore nostalgia. At any moment on Weekend you may hear flecks of Ida, hints of Brian Eno, moments of folk-pop, math rock and new wave. Maybe even allusions to the other bands on the Audible kids' resumés: Mazarin, Lefty's Deceiver, Matt Pond PA. Still, it's a natural sound, as catchy as it is surprising.
