One Track Mind

The Go! Team

"Ladyflash"

In retrospect, my music tastes benefited from growing up right around the time of Top 40 radio's first FM resurgence. For every thudding corpo-rock clunker they spun during the mid-'80s, the DJs at New York's No. 1 pop pusher, Z100, would throw down a thrilling string of gems—"Roxanne, Roxanne," "I Wonder if I Take You Home," "When I Think of You." Each song would Doppler-echo from every passing car and bounce onto the steaming summer asphalt, resulting in an overheated haze of hyperactive beats and lilting, uplifted vocals. It seems that some of that summer pop radio spirit traveled on a breeze across the Atlantic and was picked up by The Go! Team. It's the only explanation for the way the sampled strings, playground-chant choruses and pop-pop beats that make up "Ladyflash" sound when smooshed together—it's as if the song was distilled from a series of passing cars headed to the beach, all locking in yesterday's biggest hit station and ripping the knob off before they peel out.
